Life was simpler back in 1995. We didn’t have the world judging us via social media. The tech boom was in full swing. And we had the world’s best operating system, Windows 95.
Microsoft’s Windows 95 was the big coming out party for Windows. It brought Windows to a whole new generation of users.
And now you can experience the exciting world of Windows 95 once again without leaving the comfort of your internet browser.
It’s true! A 19 year old named Andrea Faulds created a browser-based emulation of Windows 95 using DOSBox and Emscripten.
The emulator was built to celebrate 20 years of Windows 95. The OS was released on August 24, 1995 and the emulator was released onto the internet on August 24, 2015 (although the entire internet didn’t seem to hear about it until February 2016).

What You Need to Know About the Browser-Based Windows 95

That browser-based simulator is prone to the odd crash but is surprisingly stable considering you’re running a full-fledged operating system over a freaking internet browser.
Here are some of the fast facts you need to know about Windows 95:
-You can play Solitaire or Minesweeper
-You can scribble in MS Paint
-You can experience the thrill of the original baby blue background and the grey square tile interface
-The emulator’s local drive just uses your RAM, which means that nothing is saved after you exit out of your browser
-Technically, running the browser-based software is illegal because Windows 95 is a copyrighted piece of software, and Microsoft has not let that copyright expire (they probably never will). Of course, Microsoft will never sell Windows 95 again as a retail product, so it’s a bit of a victimless crime.
The last version of Windows 95 was sold on December 31, 2001. Today, you can experience it all over again by visiting the following website: https://win95.ajf.me/
