What is Scrabber ransomware? And how does it carry out its attack?

Scrabber ransomware is a data-encrypting malware designed to lock important files in a computer. It is a new HiddenTear variant that was just discovered recently. It seems to be targeting English and Russian-speaking users since half of its ransom note is written in Russian while the other part of it is written in English. It uses “.junked” extension in marking its encrypted files.

Once it infects a computer, Scrabber ransomware drops its payload file and runs it. This payload file is the one that connects the computer to the remote server of Scrabber ransomware which is managed by the attackers. After that, it makes several changes in the system settings like the Windows Registry where it modifies and adds some entries and keys to allow it to automatically run on every system startup. It then scans the computer in search for files with the following extensions:

.txt, .doc, .docx, .xls, .xlsx, .pdf, .pps, .ppt, .pptx, .odt, .gif, .jpg, .png, .db, .csv, .sql, .mdb.sln.php, .asp, .aspx, .html, .xml, .psd, .frm, .myd, .myi, .dbf, .mp3, .mp4, .avi, .mov, .mpg, .rm, .wmv, .m4a, .mpa, .wav, .sav, .gam, .log, .ged, .msg, .myo, .tax, .ynab, .ifx, .ofx, .qfx, .qif, .qdf, .tax2013, .tax2014, .tax2015, .box, .ncf, .nsf, .ntf, .lwp

After it finds its targeted files, Scrabber ransomware will encrypt them using the AES encryption algorithm and appends the .junked extension to every affected file. Following encryption, Scrabber ransomware releases its ransom note in a GUI window which contains the following message:
