What is Satyr ransomware? And how does it carry out its attack?

Satyr ransomware is a file-encrypting virus that was recently spotted a few days ago. This new ransomware threat carries out its attack just like a typical ransomware infection – once it is able to infiltrate a system, it will download and install more malicious files in the system. It also uses the Command Prompt with administrator privileges to execute commands in the system. After that, Satyr ransomware will scan the system looking for files to encrypt. It may encrypt files with the following extensions:
.3gp, .7z, .apk, .avi, .bmp, .cdr, .cer, .chm, .conf, .css, .csv, .dat, .db, .dbf, .djvu, .dbx, .docm, doc, .epub, .docx .fb2, .flv, .gif, .gz, .iso .ibooks,.jpeg, .jpg, .key, .mdb .md2, .mdf, .mht, .mobi .mhtm, .mkv, .mov, .mp3, .mp4, .mpg .mpeg, .pict, .pdf, .pps, .pkg, .png, .ppt .pptx, .ppsx, .psd, .rar, .rtf, .scr, .swf, .sav, .tiff, .tif, .tbl, .torrent, .txt, .vsd, .wmv, .xls, .xlsx, .xps, .xml, .ckp, .zip, .java, .py, .asm, .c, .cpp, .cs, .js, .php, .dacpac, .rbw, .rb, .mrg, .dcx, .db3, .sql, .sqlite3, .sqlite, .sqlitedb, .psd, .psp, .pdb, .dxf, .dwg, .drw, .casb, .ccp, .cal, .cmx, .cr2
Satyr ransomware uses both the AES and RSA ciphers in locking targeted files. As soon as it completes the data encryption process, this crypto-malware drops its ransom note explaining to its victims what happened to their files. Here’s the content of the ransom note:
“Security tips
All your files have been encrypted due to a security problem with your PC. If you want to restore them, write us the Telegram: https://t.me/tony_montana10928 or @tony_montana10928 and send personal ID KEY: <…>
For Decrypt Your Personal Files Send 0.018 BTC to this address: <…>
You have to pay for decryption in Bitcoins. The price depends on how you write us. After payment we will send you decryption tool that will decrypt all your files”
As you can see, the crooks behind Satyr ransomware wants its victims to contact them via Telegram messenger once the payment is sent that amounts to 0.018 BTC – approximately $147.5. However, contacting these crooks and paying the ransom is definitely not recommended.
How does Satyr ransomware spread its malicious payload?
Satyr ransomware spreads its malicious payload via spam emails. These malicious payloads are often enclosed in an executable file, document, PDF file, etc. so you need to be wary of downloading attachments especially if they’re from suspicious-looking emails.

Try to recover your encrypted files using the Shadow Volume copies
Restoring your encrypted files using Windows’ Previous Versions feature will only be effective if Satyr ransomware hasn’t deleted the shadow copies of your files. But still, this is one of the best and free methods there is, so it’s definitely worth a shot.
To restore the encrypted file, right-click on it and select Properties, a new window will pop-up, then proceed to Previous Versions. It will load the file’s previous version before it was modified. After it loads, select any of the previous versions displayed on the list like the one in the illustration below. And then click the Restore button.
