What is Cookies Control? And how does it work?

Cookies Control is a browser extension for Google Chrome browser that supposedly enables its users to monitor and control cookies on several websites. On a first glance, it may look like a legitimate and useful application and it might seem a practical tool for users who are concerned about their online privacy. However, after its installation, it starts to show its real color. So due to its unwanted behaviors, it is categorized as an adware and a potentially unwanted program (PUP).

One of the reasons why it is categorized as such is that it stealthily sneaks its way into your computer without your permission. And even if you intentionally added this extension, you might have been deceived by its Privacy Policy which tells you that it does not track its users’ activities online when in fact it does. As you can probably notice, the intrusive ads displayed somewhat matches your interests or taste, this is because Cookies Control keeps track of your online activities to gather personal information. The information gathered is shared with third parties to generate revenue from displaying sponsored contents.

In addition, this questionable browser extension might also deliver ads that could lead you to suspicious sites that want to get your personal information or offer to install bogus applications. It does not take an expert to see that Cookies Control is a threat to your security. Thus, removing it as soon as you can would be the wisest thing to do.

How is Cookies Control distributed?

In all fairness, Cookies Control is distributed on its official website as well as on the Chrome Webs store. However, according to our researchers, you can also obtain this program from free sharing sites that offer software bundles. Most cyber crooks rely on this distribution technique for most users tend to rush their installation without paying any mind to each step. The thing is when you install software bundle, you must opt for the Custom or Advanced setup rather than the quick one so that you can deselect the extra programs in the bundle. It would also help if you carefully read and comprehend each step instead of just clicking Next and Next just to get the installation over and done with.

Since Cookies Control only works on Google Chrome browser, you won’t have such a hard time removing it. All you have to do is to follow the steps below to get rid of it.

Step 1: Launch Google Chrome and click the wrench icon. And from the drop-down menu click on Tools and then select Extensions.

Step 2: Under the Extensions tab, select Cookies Control or other suspicious browser extensions related to it and then click on the Trash icon.

Step 3: Click on Remove button from the confirmation dialog box.

Step 4: Reset Google Chrome. To do that, click the three stripes icon located at the upper-right corner of your screen. And then select Settings.

Step 5: under Settings, look for Show advanced settings at the bottom of the page and click on it.

Step 6: Then click on the Reset browser settings button.

Step 7: After that, a dialog box pops up, click the Reset button to Reset Chrome.

Step 8: After you reset Chrome, enable the Phishing and Malware Protection in Chrome to prevent PUPs like Cookies Control from infecting your computer again in the future. To do that, click Settings once again.

Step 9: Select the Show advanced settings again.

Step 10: Go to the Privacy section and check the Enable phishing and malware protection option.

Step 11: Restart Chrome.

The next step below is not recommended for you if you don’t know how to navigate the Registry Editor. Making registry changes can highly impact your computer. So it is highly advised to use PC Cleaner Pro instead to get rid of the entries that Cookies Control created. So if you are not familiar with the Windows Registry skip to Step 15 onwards.

However, if you are well-versed in making registry adjustments, then you can proceed to step 12.

Step 12: Navigate to the following path:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Google\Chrome\PreferenceMACs\Default\extensions.settings

Step 13: And then look for cfkpefbllpconnkfpdgagkifmflckkdp value and delete it.

Step 14: Close the Registry Editor.

Step 15: Empty your Recycle Bin.
