What is JosepCrypt ransomware? And how does it carry out its attack?

JosepCrypt ransomware is a file-encrypting virus discovered recently. Based on the analysis conducted by security experts on the code snippets of JosepCrypt, this new ransomware does not belong to any infamous ransomware group which, at the time of writing, still remains unknown.
JosepCrypt ransomware will make changes and adds more infected files the moment it enters the system. These files help the crypto-malware in carrying out its attack on the targeted computer. In addition, it also makes modifications in the Windows Registry in order to run on every system boot. After these changes are completed, it starts to search for files with specific formats such as:
.3dm, .3g2, .3gp, .7zip, .aaf, .accdb, .aep, .aepx, .aet, .ai, .aif, .as, .as3, .asf, .asp, .asx, .avi, .bmp, .c, .class, .cpp, .cs, .csv, .dat, .db, .dbf, .doc, .docb, .docm, .docx, .dot, .dotm, .dotx, .dwg, .dxf, .efx, .eps, .fla, .flv, .gif, .h, .idml, .iff, .indb, .indd, .indl, .indt, .inx, .jar, .java, .jpeg, .jpg, .js, .m3u, .m3u8, .m4u, .max, .mdb, .mid, .mkv, .mov, .mp3, .mp4, .mpa, .mpeg, .mpg, .msg, .pdb, .pdf, .php, .plb, .pmd, .png, .pot, .potm, .potx, .ppam, .ppj, .pps, .ppsm, .ppsx, .ppt, .pptm, .pptx, .prel, .prproj, .ps, .psd, .py, .ra, .rar, .raw, .rb, .rtf, .sdf, .sdf, .ses, .sldm, .sldx, .sql, .svg, .swf, .tif, .txt, .vcf, .vob, .wav, .wma, .wmv, .wpd, .wps, .xla, .xlam, .xll, .xlm, .xls, .xlsb, .xlsm, .xlsx, .xlt, .xltm, .xltx, .xlw, .xml, .xqx, .xqx, .zip
Once it finds the aforementioned file types, JosepCrypt ransomware will encrypt them using a strong encryption algorithm and affix the .josep extension to each one of the affected files. It then creates a file named “RECOVERY.txt” and places it on every folder that contains encrypted files. This text file has the ransom note that states:
“A l l y o u r f i l e s a r e e n c r y p t e d . I f y o u w a n t t o r e c o v e r t h e y , w r i t e m e t o j o s e p n i v e r i t o @ a o l . c o m Y o u h a v e a 5 d a y s Y O U R K E Y : *****”
