What is GANDCRAB V4.4 ransomware? And how does it execute its attack?

GANDCRAB V4.4 ransomware is the latest variant of GandCrab ransomware which follows the GANDCRAB V4.1 variant. This new variant still uses the same extension which is .KRAB in marking its encrypted files. According to security experts, there are some slight changes to this new variant as well.

Once it infects a computer, GANDCRAB V4.4 ransomware will drop its malicious payload in the system and employs a data gathering module in order to harvest information about the system and the user. The harvested information is used for stealth protection which allows the crypto-malware to execute its attack without any interference. Further analysis also showed that constant monitoring is enforced on the infected system to monitor changes in both the operating system settings, Windows Registry values, files and many more. It also showed that the engine has the ability to interact with the system volume manager which means that the crypto-malware will have access to the removable storage devices and shared networks. Thus, if the infected computer is connected to multiple shared networks, GANDCRAB V4.4 ransomware can also potentially trigger a whole network takeover.

In addition, the analysis also showed that this crypto-malware can modify the web browser settings to redirect victims to a webpage controlled by the attackers. And like most ransomware threats, GANDCRAB V4.4 ransomware also modifies and creates entries in the Windows Registry to allow it to run on every system boot making it a persistent threat.

It is also worth noting the difference between this new variant and the previous GandCrab variant. This new variant creates a specific mutex value. It turns out that under certain conditions this will block the operation of the crypto-virus which means that it might have also been created as a killswitch variant, an upgraded weapon or just a new ransomware – whichever the case is, this new GandCrab variant is definitely dangerous.

After it encrypts files, it adds the .KRAB extension to each one of them and opens a ransom note with the following content:

“—= GANDCRAB 4 =—
