Two Thirds of Americans Have Experienced Digital Eye Strain: Here Are the Symptoms

The human eye didn’t evolve to stare at screens all day. That’s why many of us have experienced digital eye strain after long hours on a computer or phone.

According to a new report, a whopping two thirds of Americans have experienced symptoms of digital eye strain. That report comes from The Vision Council and was based on a survey of more than 10,000 adults.

Here’s the infographic The Vision Council came up with after that survey:

Some of the key points to get from that report included:

-9 out of 10 Americans admitted to using digital devices for two or more hours every day

-6 out of 10 Americans claimed they used digital devices five or more hours per day

-7 out of 10 Americans said they used two or more digital devices at a time

-65% claimed that had experienced symptoms of digital eye strain, including dry and irritated eyes, blurred vision, eye fatigue, neck and back pain, and headaches

Symptoms Can Occur After Just 2 Hours

According to the report from The Vision Council, digital eye strain symptoms typically occur after spending two or more hours in front of a digital screen. Prolonged periods of exposure to that screen appear to exacerbate symptoms.

Ultimately, our eyes haven’t evolved to keep up with the number of devices we’re required to use every day. This problem is only becoming more pronounced on younger generations. It was inevitable that this would start to affect our health in negative ways.

Carpal tunnel syndrome and tendinitis were once thought to be the biggest hazards associated with using the computer for long periods of time. Now, we can add digital eye strain to that list. Now good luck finding a job that doesn’t require you to stare at a computer for long periods of time.
